Soapbox Science is a novel public outreach platform for promoting women and non-binary scientists and the science they do, transforming public areas into an arena for public learning and scientific debate;
Soapbox Science is not just about the speakers. Without a supportive team of committed, enthusiastic people, a Soapbox event simply cannot happen. Each event relies on an animated team of up to 20 volunteers.
Prior to the day, the volunteers play a crucial part in preparing everything for the big day, including reach out and promotion to the public as well as creating content to invite people to come along.
On the big day, volunteers play a crucial role in rounding up the public, chatting to them informally about science, supporting the speakers by managing props and helping to calm any pre-box nerves (even then most experienced speakers get a bit jittery!). The volunteers also gather data so we can effectively monitor the success of the event: volunteers carry out the bulk of our streamlined evaluation process, through interviews, observations and counting footfall.
Prior to the event, time commitment will be 1-2 hours weekly. On the big day, you will need to turn up prior to the event for briefing and preparation. You’ll also need to stay after the event ends, to help clear up.
Join us for an afternoon of fun, informal and inspiring science and help challenge ideas about who can be a scientist!
The deadline for applications is Friday 3rd May and we will be in touch shortly thereafter.
Best,
